West Stow teams up with Churchill Catering

*    New local caterers to manage historic location’s cafe

West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village and Country Park near Bury St Edmunds has teamed up with a new catering and events company to run its popular cafe.

Suffolk-based Churchill Catering has taken over the lease to manage the on-site dining and relaxation spot, which already has a new look, Costa Coffee, a new range of homemade foods and a series of fun events planned.

West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village Cafe, will offer a full range of traditional foods, including everything from fresh baguettes, sandwiches and panini, to daily hot meals and healthy food options, including gluten free-cakes.

Churchill’s, a family-run business based in Ingham, has over 20 years’ experience working in the catering and event management business, including the heritage sector, and took over the cafe site this month.

Now with clients across the country including the Richard III visitor centre in Leicester and the Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre and Country Park in Sutton Cheney, the company also prides itself on using 70% of suppliers from within a 20 mile radius of each of the sites it manages.

Cllr Joanna Rayner, St Edmundsbury Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, said: “With so many successful events at West Stow this year, and many more planned, we decided it was time for a new look and feel for the cafe and are delighted to have Churchill Catering on board.

“It is a local Fair Trade company, with years of managing catering operations for many different clients, including heritage centres, and I am looking forward to seeing how the cafe develops, which will be in keeping with the Anglo-Saxon Village and country park.

“The cafe is also dog friendly meaning dog owners can take a break with their pet after walking in the park.”

Churchill Catering was founded 21-years ago by Tony Nicholl, from Bury St Edmunds.

The company’s first site was at Palmer and Harvey in Brandon: since then, it has gone on to provide catering services nationwide for industry, business and public sector clients, shopping centres, sites of leisure, sport, and historic interest. It also owns and manages several high street delis and cafes.

The company also provides catering services for Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre, High Lodge in Thetford Forest, Cambridgeshire Constabulary and Harwich International Port.

Plans for West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village Cafe include new food options along with cafe-led events such as bank holiday hog roasts, the first on August 30 & 31 for the British Warriors Through Time event, children-eat-free-days, parties, and regular coffee mornings, when no cup of coffee will cost more that £1.50.

West Stow, which recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Anglo-Saxon village reconstruction, has recently seen a successful run of events including new style celebrations such as the Big Brecks Fest and Dragon Festival.

Apart from regular visitors from the local area and beyond, these events combined have attracted nearly 5,000 people to the heritage site. Some 13,400 school children have also visited this year for educational trips.

Equally, since taking on the cafe, St Edmundsbury Borough Council, continue to be very dynamic, helpful and supportive and we are excited about what we can achieve together.

Opening in May 2015

In December 2014 Churchill Catering were awarded the contract to manage all catering and vending at the £37 million new build Huddersfield Leisure Centre, Merton Street, Huddersfield. Opening at the beginning of May 2015 this Leisure Centre is expecting a footfall of 800,000 visits per annum.

The facility will be owned by Kirklees Council and managed by Kirklees Active Leisure who were looking for an ‘innovative, quality catering service……’ and a ‘vibrant, modern approach to catering in the Centre that reflects….diversity and works hard to fulfil the catering needs of all our visitors’.

The Leisure Centre boasts various Swimming Pools, Fitness and Sports Facilities including the Reef Fun Zone and Splash Park for families and a Climbing and Bouldering Wall.
In The Café Churchill Catering will offer a breakfast service where customers can enjoy Fresh Ground Speciality Coffees, Fresh Juices, Baked Morning Goods, Fresh Fruit Cups, Granola and Fresh Yogurts, as well as traditional favourites such as Crispy Bacon Rolls and Sausages Sandwiches. The lunch offer will be based on traditional favourites, from Lasagne to Cottage Pie. Running alongside this fresh Sandwiches, Baguettes and Wraps, with a huge array of fillings from the simple to the exotic will be available. Salads will feature highly on the menu – Seasonal Salads and Protein Pasta Pots with tasty Hot Snacks, Fresh Soups and Filled Jacket Potatoes available all day.

For the little ones, we will offer healthy Boxed Meals with Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Sticks, through to big favourites like Breaded Chicken Mini Fillets, Fish Goujons with French fries and lashings of ketchup!

We pride ourselves on the selection of traditional cakes that we bake on site, from Sticky Sponges and Gluten Free Slices, to Granola Tray Bakes and Chocolate Shortbread.
We shall be offering catering to facilitate children’s Birthday Parties, whether it be a Party Box or a Hot/Cold Buffet. We can accommodate all dietary needs and are happy to discuss a more bespoke approach to the individual needs of the party. We can provide Birthday Cakes, Cup Cakes and Party Bags.

Finally, in partnership with our client we are offering all members and KAL card holders a 10% discount on everything produced on site.

First New Opening in 2015

We are delighted to have won the contract to manage the Visitors Centre Restaurant and Retail outlet at Kirroughtree within Galloway Forest Park, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. Our objective at Kirroughtree is to provide an excellent range of home-made products using local produce wherever possible. We will be open for business everyday commencing Monday 12th January 2015.

The food offer will be based on Fresh/Local/Healthy with traditional choices including a hearty Breakfast with a range of Lunches and Specials for Children and Pensioners with Home-made Cakes featuring strongly within the menu. We are introducing Cafédirect as the coffee brand. Their coffee is first class and all their profits go into assisting fledging growers in third world countries. At Kirroughtree, we are fully licenced and will offer a full Event, Meeting and Hospitality service with excellent menu choices and value for money.

We manage catering services for the Forestry Commission at several other locations including Edinburgh, The Lake District, Norfolk and in Kent. A large part of our business is involved in Police Catering for numerous forces and catering for large companies who provide Staff Restaurant facilities. In the high street, our Shopping Centre Restaurants and Food Court business continues to expand with recent openings in Stafford and Falkirk.

Churchill Catering Ltd has been rated as ‘STRONG’ in a recent industry report analysing the UK’s 443 largest Contract Catering companies.

This is the highest accolade awarded by industry analysts, Plimsoll and reflects Churchill’s performance over a 12 month period.

This has been achieved in a difficult marketplace where 134 of our competitors are in financial danger and a record number are making a loss.

Food Awards 2014Top contenders for the Inaugural Food Awards England and Wales are announced

Thousands of nominations flooded in for the inaugural Food Awards England and Wales. Voted for by the public, The awards are designed to recognise the efforts of England and Wales restaurants, takeaways, gastro pubs, hotel restaurants, cafes and bistros, as well as shine the spotlight on the wonderful local producers who supply their delicious ingredients.

The black tie evening will be hosted by Miss United Kingdom Supranational Rachelle Perez at the Mercure Manchester Piccadilly Hotel, which will take place on the 17th of November.

Churchill Catering Limited of Ingham near Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk has been shortlisted in the Caterer of The Year category. Churchill Catering will find out if they will be crowned winners at the glamorous ceremony being held in Manchester.

Serving the very best in food hospitality, from servers, to specialists and suppliers, the evening promises to be the biggest in the English food calendar.

As well as the Awards, the event will also help raise funds for the official charity partner, Make A Wish Foundation UK granting magical wishes to children and young people fighting life-threatening conditions.

Ingham: Churchill Catering wins contract at new Richard III visitor centre in Leicester

Churchill Catering has won the contract to manage catering, events and hospitality at the new Richard III Visitor Centre in Leicester.

The new centre is to be located on the site where the remains of England’s last Plantagenet king were discovered, in one of the most remarkable archeological discoveries of recent years.

Richard III was killed at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485 which ended the Wars of the Roses and saw Henry Tudor claim the crown, as Henry VII.

King Richard’s body was hastily buried in nearby Leicester within the church of a friary, the site of which became lost and was latterly covered by a car park.

Tony Nicholl, managing director of Churchill Catering, which is based at Ingham, near Bury St Edmunds, said: “This is perhaps one of the most prestigious catering contracts to have come up nationally so far this year and it says a lot about our company’s ability to deliver the quality standards and value at what is going to be an internationally renowned experience.

“We already run the catering, events and hospitality at Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre so to have both locations which featured so prominently in the final days of Richard III is excellent for us and our local based company”.
